Central African Republic
Hundreds of people protested in the capital of Central Africa Republic on Friday calling for nullification of the first round results of the Presidential election.
Many were of the opinion that if the the legislative elections were nullified by the court because of irregularities, then the same should have applied to the Presidential results that were marred with numerous discrepancies.
“The legislative elections were cancelled due to irregularities. We ask the same for the presidential elections that are racking up countless irregularities, so we’re united here now before this symbolic United Nations building to demand nothing but our rights,” said Edgard Gremboui, a youth leader for the Movement of the Liberation of Central African People party.
The presidential run-off is scheduled for February in a former French colony that has been under a three year transitional government.
The protesters matched to the U.N peacekeeping mission offices demanding a response to their request to cancel the elections.
“We ask the international community that has already helped us very much to not let their efforts go to waste. They will have to help us in order for the voice of the people to be heard,” said Aime Mbongo, vice president of the Alliance of Democratic Forces for Transition, a coalition of parties
Central African Republic has been marred by violence since 2013 after the Muslim Seleka rebels seized power in the mostly Christian nation, sparking violence from the anti-balaka Christian militia.
Despite having a transitional government, inter-communal violence has continued.
